A Vision and a Dream

The Vision: Chicago, in the dark I walk through the park towards the Great Lake. Alone, skyscrapers at my back, stars overhead. I walk from the home, aged, grey, muscular, the ragged clothing nearly covers the bones on the ground, everywhere. I'm determined, indifferent, calm. I find myself in the front seat of an Automobile, my Daughter drives, my Wife, my Beautiful Wife in the Back Seat.

The Dream: Standing, bent slightly foward, my Wife rests on my back, nuzzling my neck, She whispers in my ear, trusting, her weight making me lighter.

These watercolor paintings of homes around New Carlisle were made on mylar film in 2002. Mylar, in the past, was widely used for drafting work and consists of a transparent plastic material with a frosty surface or coating that will accept ink or paint. The material is ideal for transferring images or making tracings, each of these works is approximately 4"x6" in size.

I've thought for a while that I would enjoy wearing a t-shirt with an image like this. Or maybe an image of a fork and spoon together standing at attention. I don't wear any jewelry except for my wedding ring but believe I would fancy a neckless in this concept as well. Seems like an appropriate statement for me, eating that is, and quite possibly the only thing I consistently believe in. I guess it may come as no surprise that I'm on the larger side... SO.... If anyone is wondering what to get me for Christmas..Sitting on the couch sketching what I see.....skinny legs? Well, though I do like to eat, I also enjoy riding my bicycle quite a bit, I've even invested in studded snow tires this year. There is that familial tendency toward Chicken Legs too.. Thanks Gramps..

SAVANAH JOSEPHINE VAN DUSEN, daughter of HENRY VAN DUSEN and HARRIET VANOSDOLL. She was born December 15, 1853, and died June 06, 1944.

My family always spoke that we were descended from the Pennsylvania Dutch. I think that talk may have started with the marriage of my Great, Great Grandparents. Our paternal blood line, found through DNA testing, points to Ulster Scots decent. I think it likely an ancestor may have felt the need to disassociate themselves with this ancestry due to their turbulent history.

According to Clan Moffat the family was originally centered around the the town of Moffat Scotland, located just north of Scotland's border with England. For a period prior to the end of the 16th century the family were Border Reivers. Reivers were both English and Scottish and raided both sides of the border impartially, so long as the people they hit had no powerful protectors and no connection to their own kin. In 1603, James VI ruler of Scotland, became king James I of England and took out stern justice on the Reivers. I have heard said that around these times it was a death sentence to bear the name of Moffat. Feuds also were ongoing with other clans. In the year 1557 the clan was struck hard when a number of leading Moffats were in a building that was burnt by a rival clan, killing all those who tried to escape, and Robert Moffat, the alleged clan chief was murdered. In the early 1600's many living in the Scottish Borders migrated to Ulster Ireland.

My ancestors possibly made a living on an Ulster Plantation for a few generations before heading to America, first coming through North Carolina then Tennessee the family has said.

Michiana "Bike Map"

Today the new "Bike Michiana Map" went to the printer!! The map recognizes "official bike routes", and divides them into three catagories: 1. Seperated Paths 2. Roads with Bike Lanes 3. Roads with a Bike Route or Share the Road Sign.. I believe this will be a help to bicylists and motorists both by helping to guide bike traffic from the busier roads and onto more "bike friendly" roads. Also, carrying only official designated roads on the map will, I hope, help build a consensus for expanding, and including routes to connect all major destinations. Get your copy at bikemichiana.org or at your local South Bend, Mishawaka or Elkhart bike shop.

This is what New Carlisle looked like when I was growing up.. You can see the old Elemetery School, The old Water Tower and my Grandparents house.. I remember my Dad, Grandfather and I shooting a .22 rifle out across the field from near the garage building in the lower left of the photo.. We set up some old cans near the field line and my Dad balanced a Golf Ball on an old gas can spigot.. My Dad was a great shot, with his .22 rifle he hit that golf ball from about 100 feet away and it went flying out into the field. Later, he cut the bullet out of the ball and gave it to me..
