When I was in grade school I had a gold single speed Murray. Twenty inch wheels with a Banana seat. I rode it all over town, and to Bourissa Hills Park often. I got my ass kicked there once, literally. There were a group of girls there one day, and I really liked one of them. Of course at that age I had no idea how to talk to girls, so to get her attention I tossed small stones one at a time in her direction. Her older sister didn't like this one bit, and told me bitterly to stop or leave. Out of defiance, I don't believe I did. I remember her coming over and delivering a big roundhouse knuckle to the side of the head. Then she rared back and kicked me square in the ass as hard as she could. Hurt like hell. I sat on my bike in disbelief, I couldn't fight a girl. PAIN. Yeah, Buddhists teach us that life is suffering. Yes, but what if the very will to live itself could be summed up as PAIN? From that initial swat on the ass to the last breath, what if it is simply pain that keeps us all going? Evidenced as hunger, thirst, struggling, longing, aches and pains, or their consequences, and once they're gone or forgotten our purpose has been fulfilled. Nirvana. BAM.... Would that put those indifferent to suffering or even those who enjoy it at some sort of advantage?

Art Beat will be happening Saturday, August 28 in Downtown South Bend from 11 am - 6 pm.

A Vision and a Dream

The Vision: Chicago, in the dark I walk through the park towards the Great Lake. Alone, skyscrapers at my back, stars overhead. I walk from the home, aged, grey, muscular, the ragged clothing nearly covers the bones on the ground, everywhere. I'm determined, indifferent, calm. I find myself in the front seat of an Automobile, my Daughter drives, my Wife, my Beautiful Wife in the Back Seat.

The Dream: Standing, bent slightly foward, my Wife rests on my back, nuzzling my neck, She whispers in my ear, trusting, her weight making me lighter.

These watercolor paintings of homes around New Carlisle were made on mylar film in 2002. Mylar, in the past, was widely used for drafting work and consists of a transparent plastic material with a frosty surface or coating that will accept ink or paint. The material is ideal for transferring images or making tracings, each of these works is approximately 4"x6" in size.
